One of the problems with our lives today, and the main threat to the calm and tranquility of our life interfaces are the thoughts that rattle around our heads every day. Because we lead complex and fast lives and do very little in the way of organising, our heads are full of the ’stuff’ that we need to remember. Our brains daren’t take a break in case we forget something. The result of this is that our brains can’t relax - ever gone to your bed at night and been unable to switch off? This leads on to lack of sleep and stress, that never relents!
If we are going to develop more satisfying lives where all of our interfaces work in harmony we need a sound base to build on. Have you ever spring cleaned your house, or experienced the benefits when your wife has! You will know how good it feels to be in control, to have removed the clutter of the Winter months - the same applies to our minds.
So where do we begin? Well the best approach is to empty our heads! No, seriously, don’t laugh! Get a thick notebook and pen, sit down in your comfy chair with a hot drink (or not!) and write down one item per sheet any items that pop out of your head. You might be surprised what appears - the rusty car in the garage, the old printer in the loft, phoning that old friend you miss, that report that never gets completed. Everything!
Why are we doing this? Well over my next few posts I will be sharing with you some of the techniques created by Dave Allen the creator of Getting Things Done, otherwise known as GTD for short. He builds on what we have just achieved to create an organised life style that avoids our heads getting cluttered. It takes a bit of a change in focus but the results are worth it!
The beauty of the GTD techniques is not only a clearer head making us feel more relaxed, but the organisational skills help us to free up time to pursue our other interests such as developing our Finance Interface.
Join me for my next post where I will share with you how we handle the ’stuff’ that has just come out of our heads and is ready to be sorted.
